King George V 1910 lamp box. This design of letter box was first Introduced in 1897 during the reign of Queen Victoria. This was the very first British designed lamp box which basically remained unaltered until 1935. The overall shape was copied from an even earlier American mail box. These type of letter boxes are referred too as lamp boxes because when first introduced they were attached to lamp posts. Like the modern day versions this box can easily be mounted on a pole post or wall. In the UK care should be taken to avoid accidental public use. MANUFACTURED BY A. HANDYSIDE CASTINGS.
